On Lakyn James

Character’s Full Name: Lakyn James

Name Origin: Originally Lakyn’s full name was “Jeremy Laken James”. He was named directly after his father, though its unknown for sure where his middle name came from, except that his mother probably chose it. When Ben James adopted him, Lakyn took out his first name altogether and made the decision to go by his middle name permanently (a habit he’d picked up back in the 6th grade). On Juliet’s suggestion, he replaced the ‘e’ with a ‘y’.

Nicknames: Jr, by family; Lakyn, by everyone; Lake, on occasion.

Religion: Lakyn’s parents were only religious when it suited them (often in public settings), but it was something Lakyn himself latched onto pretty strongly. He struggled with this more in his early adult years, and although he still has a belief in God he doesn’t follow a specific set of religious rules.

PhysicalityLakyn resembles the James side of the family enough that he could be Juliet’s brother rather than her cousin. He has a tall and thin stature, fair skin, dark shaggily cut hair, soft features, and eyes that appear silver in color. Despite the fact that he’s fairly small his muscle structure is lean – he works out enough to have a runner’s body. He has a bit of a dependency on hoodies which range from designs in pop culture to solid colors. He also likes fitted or skinny jeans and converse.  Height: 5’10” | Weight: 150lbs | Shirt Size: S | Chest: 35in | Waist: 30in | Shoe Size: 8.5

Sexuality: Gay. Lakyn had a hard time coming out, in part because of his small traditionally minded school but mostly because of his homophobic parents. It happened his last year of middle school and resulted in violent behaviors. The year ended with a suicide attempt brought on by many different factors.

Tattoos: Before he was of legal age, Lakyn had an infinity symbol tattooed on his wrist as a tribute to his aunt (Juliet has a matching one). It’s also extremely probable that he and Scott got a couple’s tattoo sometime after their wedding. (Likely something like this, though probably on their shoulder blades instead of their wrists).

+There’s a good chance Lakyn would, at some point, get a tattoo to symbolize his survival of life, rather it’s meaning would be obvious or not, but I have yet to decide on what it would be. (Personally, I approve of the semicolon project, but I think Lakyn would shy away from it if only because he has enough labels on his body.) I saw a girl on tumblr once who tattooed her heart beat above her attempt scars and I could see him doing that with his loved ones heart beats instead of his own.

+Also, its entirely possible he would cover his scars altogether. Definitely wouldn’t put it past this boy to adorn himself in pale colored flowers. However, that’s a lot of skin. So who knows. Things I’ll think about for sure.

Scars: Lakyn has a lot of scars, both self inflected and not, though they all stem from a rough upbringing. Due to his pale skin and the thinness of razor blades most of his cuts aren’t noticeable unless one is up close or the lighting is just right. They’re predominately on his biceps, forearms, hips, and inner thighs. Other scars come from a myriad of sources and range from visible to not.

Personality Facts: Quiet, apathetic, anxious, tends to keep people at an arms length, values communication, doesn’t like to lie, realist.

Quirks: Foul mouthed, loves video games, gets into things he knows are bad for him, doesn’t talk to people when he first meets them, works well under pressure, sports fan, likes running, likes bright colors despite his tendency to dress in darker shades. Loves horror movies and can’t stand the color white.

Skills/Talents: Very fucking smart, incredible cook, can passably understand French.

Phobias/Fears: At this point in his life Lakyn claims not to be afraid of anything, although he is still prone to nightmares. While asleep, he loses his logical processing, and therefor becomes afraid of things quite easily.

So, if you could pick someone to represent Lakyn, who would it be?

Rasmus Ledin is someone I never knew until I started searching for Lakyn, but I think he fits really well. I’m particularly fond of his hair (apparently hair is a big deal for me?) and his eyes – even though Lakyn’s are more of a grey color I think Rasmus’ get the point across.

I also really liked Logan Lerman, especially after watching him in Perks of Being a Wallflower. He’s just…missing something. Maybe it’s just because he’s so dang cute…who knows. Lol. But I have to admit, I definitely wouldn’t complain if someone wanted to cast him. (And, you know, he was cool with that). Look at me just talking like I have a movie *sighs*. Get a grip Char. (Also. This.)

On Lena Newman

Character’s Full Name: Lena Mae Newman

Name Origin: The name ‘Lena’ comes from many different places around the world and means many different things, but it was only really chosen because her parents liked the sound of it. Her middle name is her maternal grandmother’s nickname.

Nicknames: Len; in general. Pet names; by Juliet. Slurs; by Lacey (all in good fun).

Birth Date: April 3rd

Religion: Lena was raised in a nondenominational household and grows up with a general belief that there is at least Something Greater out there. Most of her religious teachings as a child came from Lacey, whose father is a Pastor.

Physicality:My brown hair was down in waves, covered by a light gray beanie that sat almost perfectly over my ears. Jade green eyes lightly lined, freckles dusting my nose and cheeks, lips colored light pink.” Lena picked up her dominate traits from her father, although at first glance she doesn’t particularly look like either of her parents. She has thick brown hair and dark green eyes. She’s noted as being curvier than Juliet though they can still occasionally share clothes (this may be because of Juliet’s tendency to buy too-large sizes). Her fashion style is usually for comfort but follows the general trends. Height: 5’6″ | Weight: 125lbs | Shirt Size: S/M | Bra Size: 36C | Pants Size: 5 | Shoe Size: 7.5

Sexuality: Bisexual. Lena came to terms with her sexuality during her Senior year of High School. She also came out that year to the acceptance of the important people in her life.

Personality Facts: Prefers to go with the flow, not easily bothered, loyal, judges books by their cover (known for stereotyping people based on their appearance), gets anxious when things become personal.

Quirks: Sarcastic, likes to fully understand things, really bad at buying Christmas gifts, independent, has a beef intolerance, has a bit of a potty mouth, likes horror movies, not a particularly good cook.

Skills/Talents: Skilled artist, particularly good at makeup and face paints, fairly smart, good driver.

Phobias/Fears: Failure – Lena is honestly terrified of the idea that she will never make something of herself.

  • +Alcoholic Drink: Strawberry Margarita

  • +Motto: “Feel the fear and do it anyway.”

So, if you could pick someone to represent Lena, who would it be?

Finding someone to look like Lena was actually fairly easy. I only searched for brunette females and immediately fell in love with Lily Collins. What I like about Lily is that she’s undoubtedly very beautiful but in a subtle kind of way. Her hair is perfect for Lena and I really love her resting face, lol.

I played with Lena’s race a little back when I was considering self publishing and thought Victoria Justice would be a good fit (for making her half Puerto Rican). I still like her, even though she’s a bit more put together than I picture Lena lol. Overall, I’d be happy with either of those girls representing in a hypothetical movie 😉

I remember someone once said that they were tired of seeing the ‘plain girls’ with an exceptionally beautiful partner when I was still writing this. I honestly never intended Lena to come off as plain…I think we lose her appearance a little bit because, obviously, the book is written in her POV. I can’t have her vainly staring at herself in the mirror all day, now can I?

On Juliet James

Character’s Full Name: Juliet Liliana James

Name Origin: Juliet was named because her mother – Lily – was playing Juliet on Broadway when she met her husband. ‘Juliet’ is of French origin, a language very close to Lily’s heart (and one that Juliet actually speaks). Juliet’s middle name, Liliana, is the full version of her mother’s name. (Lily James named Juliet, while Ben James named their son, Rick).

Nicknames: Jules, by everyone; JJ, by select few in middle and elementary school.

Birth Date: October 15th

Religion: Lily was raised Roman Catholic while Ben was brought up in a loosely Christian household. Both parents instilled a belief in God in their children without the structure and restraints of traditional religion. The family attended church growing up, but mostly for Holidays. They do, however, say Grace often.

Physicality:  “She was pretty in a simple way, because unlike her style, her features were soft. Rounded cheeks, pouty lips, large bright blue eyes. Her hair was light blond, falling down her back in damp waves, bangs swept across her forehead. She wore very little makeup except for what was dark around her eyes, making them stand out even more than—I was sure—they would on their own.” Juliet takes after her mother more in appearance, with her fair skin, blond hair, and tall stature. Her eyes and smile, however, come from her father. Her fashion style tends to verge on the punk side of things, although she likes to pick more comfortable sizes (notably, her clothes are always too large). Her favorite outfit is her sex pistols shirt, her shiny leggings, and her combat boots. Height: 5’7″ | Weight: 115lbs | Shirt Size: S | Bra Size: 34B | Pants Size: 3 | Shoe Size: 8

Sexuality: Lesbian. Juliet never particularly went through a ‘questioning’ phase thanks to the open mindedness of her family. Likewise, her sexuality was never an issue and was accepted from the start.

Tattoos: Before she was of legal age Juliet had an infinity symbol tattooed on her wrist. It was a tribute to her mother, who used to tell her family members  that she loved them infinitely. Lakyn has a matching version. Post Epilogue Lena notices that Juliet has many new tattoos. She prefers smooth and perfect lines and occasionally splashes of pale color. Some ideas for the types of tattoos she would have as an adult can be found here, here, and here. It’s safe to assume that she has quite a few.

Personality Facts: Confident disposition, relaxed stature, generally calm, soft spoken, and levelheaded. Fairly nonjudgmental but guarded when it comes to herself.

Quirks: Horrible driver, particularly fond of applying pet names to her favorite people, doesn’t deal with her own issues well, does not work well under pressure, has a history of substance dependency, cannot sing, likes video games, doesn’t handle conflict well.

Skills/Talents: Skilled artist, good at sewing and designing, fairly smart, speaks two languages, decent cook.

Phobias/Fears: Any insect that stings.

Favorite-

  • +Food: Fish, particularly Salmon
  • +Drink: Jasmine Tea
  • +Alcoholic Drink: Verdejo Wine
  • +Color: Charcoal grey
  • +Film: Interview with a Vampire
  • +Music: 80s rock or gothic rock
  • +Motto: “Just be a Queen.”

So, if you could pick someone to represent Juliet, who would it be?

Two years ago, when I first uploaded this story to Wattpad, I had a cast picked out. I ultimately ended up taking it down because people were treating it like a fanfic, which it very much was not. The truth is, I had very little exposure to the people I had put in the cast list. Taylor Momsen – who I chose as the original Juliet – I had the most to because of her role on Gossip Girl, but even then…

When I picked the cast, I just hit up Google with my most important traits. Of course, Taylor Momsen popped up when I went in for Jules. She became Juliet from that point on, but she’s not perfect. She’s got the hair, sure (although I imagine Juliet’s hair to be a little more on the ‘sandy blonde’ side than the platinum thing), but her features are a little too sharp. Personally, in my head, Juliet’s face is very soft. And although her make-up is dark, it’s more like thick eyelashes and some dark eyeliner, not the full smokey-eye thing Taylor has going for her. I think she worked a lot better when she was younger and softer. However, I have to admit, I’m not sure there’s anyone else out there who could pull her off. I mean, if they made a movie, I’d be down to see Taylor Momsen in her spot haha 😉
